St. Patrick’s Convent

The Ursuline Mission in North India began on 28th June 1953 in the sacred Gangetic plains of U.P. The first house opened was St.Patrick’s Convent, Kanpur in collaboration with the diocese of Allahabad. Mother Stefania Murelli, the Superior of the Mission, arrived at Kanpur, UP, along with other Sisters. The invitation had come from the Bishop of Allahabad, Rt. Rev. Dr. L. Raymond who had given the Sisters a residence at St. Patrick’s Church compound. The Sisters began their healing ministry in a clinic situated in the heart of the town. Later, in December 1953, two of our Sisters began teaching in the Parish School, “St. Aloysius”. In 1957 we opened Mariampur School and convent to expand our mission to various parts of North India.
On 15th of August 1988 the Indian Delegation was divided into three Provinces: South, Centre and North. The first Provincial Superior of North Province, Sr. Francesca Edattel and her Team started functioning in Mariampur Convent, Kanpur as Provincialate.
For better administration, the Provincialate, Vimal Sadan was shifted from Kanpur to Kalli-Paschim, Lucknow in 1992. The number of Communities kept increasing, and it was necessary to form a Vice-Province for better administration and more effective service and thus Nirmala Vice-Province was born in 2004 with its head quarters at Kathgodam in Uttarakhand. After six years, the Vice Province became a Province. Thus the birth of Nirmala Province with Sr. Rittie Mattathil, the first Provincial Superior and Team took place on 3rd December 2010 at Ursuline convent Greater Noida, U.P, which was already functioning as the head office of the Vice- Province.
The Provincialate, Vimal Sadan was shifted to LDA/Aashiana, Lucknow in 2008. Now the North Province is known as Vimala Province. The Provincials of the Vimala Province are the following:
